Adding a new portal and switching portals in
Global Protect client.
1. Click on the “^” in the system tray in lower right corner of the screen.
2. Click once on the Global Protect icon (globe). It will have the red “X” when disconnected.
3. Click on the three bars in upper right.
4. Select the “settings” option
5. On the General tab you will see a section for Account on top and Portals on the bottom. WiscVPN users will have the campus portal defined (uwmadison.vpn.wisc.edu)
6. Click on “Add” and in the dialog box that pops up, type: smph.vpn.wisc.edu
7. Click on Save. The Portals section will now have two entries, one for Campus VPN connections and the new one for smph.vpn.wisc.edu. If you no longer need the Campus connection then you can highlight it and click on Delete.
8. If all you need the VPN for is to connect to Department of Medicine resources then you can delete the entry for Campus (uwmadison.vpn.wisc.edu).
Connecting to the VPN
1. Click on the “^” in the system tray in lower right corner of the screen.
2. Click once on the Global Protect icon (globe). It will have the red “X” when disconnected.
3. When the client opens, you will see a portals section on the bottom. If you have multiple portal entries you can click on the drop-down and select the portal you want to use. If you only have one portal defined, then that will be what appears there.
4. Click on “Connect”
For the username and password you will be using your NetID and NetID password. You will NOT need the campus static IP if you have one, just use your NetID - do NOT use NetID_1.
5. You will then be prompted for two factor authentication. You have two options here.
a. You can enter “1” and it will generate a Duo push to your mobile device.
b. Open your Duo Mobile app and look for the UW Madison NetID Login entry. You will see a six digit code there that can be type in at the prompt.
6. The Global Protect client will then proceed with the connection.
7. You will be notified when connected.
8. The icon in the system trey will then show a globe with a checkmark indicating that it is connected.
9. You now have established a secured encrypted connection to the SMPH VPN for the Department of Medicine. All your network traffic, including internet browsing is now going through the SMPH firewall for additional security.
