DOM Account Requirement:
6/17/2025: Please note that our Remote Desktop solution is NOT intended for users who:
- Already have a DOM issued desktop or laptop, and
- Have access to the SMPH Global Protect Portal
If you already have a DOM issued computer, you should instead be using the Global Protect VPN to directly connect to your DOM resources. This should also provide a better experience when working remotely!
Please Also Note: Remote access to Department of Medicine resources like Remote Desktop (and Citrix previously) MUST be requested ahead of time. If you haven't used the DOM Citrix server in the past, please have your supervisor contact the Help Desk via e-mail to have your RDP access enabled:

Thank you!
Introduction:
5/20/25: The Department of Medicine is retiring its previous Citrix Remote Access server in favor of a Windows Remote Desktop solution. Previous Citrix users were sent an email/directions about this upcoming change, but just in case, those instructions are included here. (You can download the .RDP file, along with a PDF version of these instructions at the bottom of this document).
The biggest change you'll notice is how you actually login to the session; you'll be using your campus NetID/campus password to sign into these sessions. Our network team has worked diligently to make sure your current folder rights have been transferred over behind the scenes--while the drive names might look a little different, your rights to the G: and K: drives should remain unchanged!
Please note: these instructions are aimed at users who have used a personal computer to access our previous Citrix server; if you have access to a DOM issued computer, you should already have Global Protect installed/configured for SMPH use, and thus can access our drive mappings directly. Contact the DOM Help Desk if you have questions about this change!
Directions for PC:
1. Download the Campus VPN -for use from a personal computer.
a. Open a browser and go to: https://uwmadison.vpn.wisc.edu/
b. Login with your campus NetID and password and DUO
c. Download the correct installer for your computer – Mac or Windows. If you are unsure what version to get for Windows (32 vs 64 bit) choose 64 bit. Double click the version you downloaded to start installing it.
2. From a personal device, open the Global Protect App and enter the portal information as follows:
UW Campus VPN Portal: uwmadison.vpn.wisc.edu
a. Login with your campus NetID and password and DUO
3. Once you are connected to VPN, you can save the RDP file you received to your computer. The file is called: DOMremote.rdp . Double-click the icon to launch the remote session.
4. Please enter your campus NetID and password. Be sure to enter your username in this format:
Username: ad\<yourNetID> (See screenshot below):
5. You should now be connected to a remote desktop session. For those of you who have used our Citrix Desktop previously, this session should behave similarly--you're connected to a "virtual desktop", where you can access DOM networked drives, and launch basic applications that can access networked files.
PLEASE NOTE!: DO NOT TREAT THIS SESSION AS YOUR OWN COMPUTER. FILES SAVED LOCALLY ON THIS SERVER CAN BE DELETED AT ANYTIME.
Directions for Mac Users:
Note: Just as in the previous section, you will need to make sure that Global Protect has been installed/configured and is connected via your NetID for the DOMremote.rdp file to work.
1. Mac users will need to ensure that they have the "Windows App" (Previously called "Remote Desktop for Mac") downloaded via the Appstore, as it will be needed to open the RDP file. To do this, you can:
a. Open the Appstore and search for the "Windows App" (be sure to choose the Microsoft product). Or, alternately:
b. Launch a web browser, and go to the following URL:
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/windows-app/id1295203466?mt=12
Note: if using the URL, you can click on "View in the Mac App Store" to trigger the download:
2. Once installed, you should be able to double-click the "DOMremote.rdp" file you've downloaded, and it should trigger the Windows app, followed by a prompt to accept a certificate; if you see this message, click "Continue":
3. You should now be prompted to enter your credentials. Just as in the PC example above, be sure to enter it in the following format:
Username: AD\<yourNetID> (See screenshot below):
4. You should now be logged into the Remote Desktop session! This will behave exactly the same way as it does on the Windows machines.
Note: If you'd like, with the Windows App open in the background, you can drag/drop the "DOMRemote.rdp" file into the "Devices" screen, and this should save a shortcut for you to use the next time. (Example below):
That should do it!
