Q. What database technologies are used?

A. We administer both MySQL databases and Microsoft SQL Servers with multiple backups per 24-hour cycle. These databases are a critical component to the department and as such are managed by a dedicated Database Administrator. The department also maintains server logging and reporting technologies, notifying key IS staff members both during work and after hours about all issues.

Q. Are applications developed for the web?

A. Based on department demand, our development services are primarily built around the web-based application model. We have found web-based applications reduce support overhead as well as provide a convenient access method for end users in many different environments. Users only need a current web browser (e.g., Google Chrome, Firefox, IE) to use our applications. No additional software needs to be installed on any of the machines.

Q. Do you develop any desktop applications?

A. Not at this time. Please use the contact information at the bottom of this page to contact us to discuss this question further.

Q. Are applications developed securely?

A. Yes. The applications we build require a secure login username and password to access any information held within your application. Further, the application will use your Department of Medicine computer login so you don’t have to remember multiple logins.

Q. What web-based technologies are used in developing applications?

A. There are a number of technologies and programming languages to build a web based application. We have found that tools like Ruby on Rails, PHP 5, JavaScript, and extensive use of formatting tools allow us to manage specific requests Department of Medicine faculty and staff require in their applications.

Q. What is the typical turn-around time for project completion?

A. Depending on the complexity of the request and outside requirements (e.g., hospital & campus), application development time can range from a few weeks to a few months. Additional lead time might be required to schedule the request into the team’s production cycle, which can vary based on existing requests and development projects.

Q. Can I hire my own people to work on our projects?

A. Please use the contact information at the bottom of this page to contact us to discuss this question further.

Q. Can I buy pre-built software to handle my application needs?

A. Please use the contact information at the bottom of this page to contact us to discuss this question further.

Q. I already have my application built by a developer within the DOM SDI group and I want to make some changes. How does that happen?

A. You can contact the SDI team developer that created the application and is providing support. Depending on the scale of the change request there will be additional time required to schedule the change request into the team’s production cycle, which can vary based on existing requests and development projects.

Q. How do I request a new project be developed?

A. You can use the contact information below to contact us and request a meeting to discuss your needs.
